What causes Acne?

Acne is a single term used to address certain varieties of skin ailments. Acne's differ in severity depending on the type. When an excess of bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum block the hair follicles, acne is formed.

Here are some general causes of acne:

Hormonal changes: The hormonal levels show a fluctuation during the adolescent period. The skin produces an excess of sebum when the hormonal levels rise and this leads to an acne breakout.

Hereditary factors: Hereditary also has a role in acne development. If your parents or grandparents suffered from such an issue, you are more likely to go through it as well.

Tension and stress: While stress cannot be linked directly to skin problems, it does have an indirect effect on our skin as it triggers acne formation. Due to stress, our body releases hormones called androgens and cortisol, and the fluctuation of such hormones will lead to the production of oil in large quantities. This leads to acne development or breakout.

What are the different types of acne?

Acne appears on the skin when the sebaceous glands are infected. There are various kinds of acne.

Non-inflammatory Acne:

Noninflammatory acnes are differentiated and described using comedones. There are open and closed comedones.

Blackheads: They are open comedones as their pores are open and are seen on the surface of the skin. The sebum inside the open pores oxidizes when in contact with the air, resulting in hardened sebum and the air mixing with melanin to form blackheads.

Whiteheads: They are closed comedones. Here the pores are covered by a thin layer of skin, which leads to the accumulation of sebum and dead skin forming a thick plug under the skin. Bacteria will attack the skin cells around the pores and whiteheads appear.

Inflammatory acnes are a bit more severe and treatment is difficult. They are caused by P.acne bacteria infecting the pores. There are four types of inflammatory acnes.

Papules: Papules are hard pimples that do not contain pus. They appear as swollen red color pimples surrounded by inflamed tissues.

Pustules: Pustules are pimples containing white blood cells. It also contains pus which is a collection of white blood cells trying to fight bacteria.

Nodules:  They appear as large bumps under the skin and happen during the last stages of a breakout. They are much more severe than the others and tend to stay longer. They are formed as a result of a buildup of sebum, bacteria and skin cells underneath the skin. They do not contain pus.

Cysts: It is very hard to get rid of this type of acne. You need to choose the perfect treatment for it. Cysts from deep underneath the skin and appear as red bumps on the skin. They do not contain pus but are very painful.
